i'm trying to load pictures on my blog again but they take too long to load. My pictures are too large.
Things are going well here at Orange Grove Volunteer Village. We had our first gigantic group roll through. There were 90 volunteers here from Oct21-27. Now we have a slow week, only 42 volunteers. Next week we hit the jackpot....143 volunteers.
My job requires alot more than I originally was told. Specifically I am supposed to match skills of groups coming in to the tasks required at each house we help rebuild. So, I make a ton of phone calls asking people what work they need done. And I may visit them to see for myself what is needed. My ability to assess damage is limited so I end up with alot of missing information. Then teams come in and go to the worksite and tell me I missed something, all the time. Well, I have been undowed with the task of material delivery, emergancy replacement of broken equipment, supervising construction at each site. Like when we had 90 people and 12 jobs going simultaneously. That was fun!! And next week I'll definately have fun delivering material to about 16 jobs, answering everyones questions, replacing broken equipment, and trying to supervise each job to make sure it's done right. HA!
All and all, things are going great. I definately need more full-time help. But that's not going to happen until maybe January. The volunteers here have really helped out. They offer to access. Like today, there's an Architect here who offered to access homes and he's been giving me detailed material lists and descriptions of the damage and repairs needed. I was able to catch up on my old voicemails and call everyone back.
Material delivery is an interesting topic here. We don't accept individuals (unless they are a visiting close friend or relative. hint hint). So everyone volunteering comes in groups. Some drive and alot fly. Because of the numbers of people in each group most rent minivans for transport. So how do we get the material to the worksite?? My truck!! It's typically the only truck here. But when the 90 people came there were 3 trucks. The most we've ever had. It still left 9 more worksites needing my deliveries. This task takes up most of my days. I should be in the office working on preparing for the incoming groups but I don't get to do that until the end of the week. that's a couple days before the next teams arrive. If there were a person to deliver supplies and check up on each site, I would be free to do my real job. But until then I am juggling keeping everyone here now busy and productive along with trying to find time to plan for the arriving groups.
